Dio Brando

Dio Brando is the antagonist of Phantom Blood, the first part of Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which began in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1987. He returns a century later as DIO, the antagonist of Stardust Crusaders, and his influence carries into Stone Ocean.

What makes Dio Brando stand out

• Taken in, then turned. George Joestar raises him as a second son to settle a debt, and Dio sets out to inherit the house instead. An ancient Stone Mask makes him a vampire.
• The World. His Stand stops time, which is what makes his Part 3 fights a puzzle rather than a brawl.
• Two names, two eras. Releases labelled Dio Brando follow the Part 1 design; those labelled DIO follow Part 3. This page carries both, which is why the same character appears twice over.
• Absent, then unavoidable. He sits out Part 2 entirely, yet later parts keep returning to him, and the series treats him as the origin of its whole chain of events.
