Dancouga

Dancouga is the combined machine of Dancouga - Super Beast Machine God, the 1985 Ashi Productions series that ran 38 episodes and kept its four pilots in four Beast Machines until they joined up.

What it does in the story

The Cyber Beast Force fights the Muge Zorbados Empire, an alien army occupying Earth. For the first half of the run the four machines fight alone; the combination arrives partway through, and Dancouga's output rises with the pilots' spiritual energy rather than any reactor rating.

What makes it different

• Four machines, four jobs. Eagle Fighter becomes the head, Land Cougar the left foot, Land Liger the right foot, and Big Moth — the largest — the torso, arms and legs.
• Each one has three shapes. A normal vehicle mode, an animal Aggressive Mode and a humanoid mode. The Aggressive barrier makes a machine nearly impervious while the pilot's temper holds.
• Sword in the leg, rifle in the hands. The Dankuken rides in Dancouga's right leg, and the Daigan rifle is assembled from the four handheld guns when they combine.
• Grounded at first. Dancouga could not fly when it debuted. A booster unit was developed later in the series and became part of the silhouette.

What this collection covers

MODEROID's Dancouga combines the four machines with no extra parts and builds to about 230 mm, with television and OVA chest plates and a self-transforming Eagle Fighter. The Powered-Up Wing Set adds a reinforced wing and a clear Dancou Kouga Sword for a two-blade display. Bandai's SMP Alternative Destiny release is a fixed Dancouga designed by Toshinao Miyauchi, and CCS Toys' Mortal Mind figure drops the transformation for alloy volume.
