XM-X3 Crossbone Gundam X-3 is the third Crossbone Gundam the Vanguard sends against the Jupiter Empire in U.C. 0133, built by the Strategic Naval Research Institute with operating data from the X-1 and X-2. Tobia Arronax takes it over and flies it through the later stages of Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam.
What it does in the story
The X-3 was meant to reach the Mother Vanguard as a resupply, consigned through Sherindon Ronah, who meant to keep it. Tobia steals it and drives at the Empire's Newtype squadron to reach Bernadette Briett, later giving it up to bring down the Divinidad.
What makes it different
It defends with I-fields instead of beam shields.
A generator in each arm raises a barrier around the hand that stops beam rifles, sabers and battleship-grade cannons. Each runs 105 seconds and needs 120 to cool, leaving a 15-second gap with nothing covering it.
Its main weapon carries fifteen emitters.
The Muramasa Blaster has a beam gun at the tip that also emits a saber, plus fourteen blade emitters down the sides. Its output limits how long it can run, so it stays useful unpowered.
The chest wears a skull with cannon in the eye sockets.
The thicker chest armour carries a skull and crossbones motif and raises resistance to ballistic hits. A pair of mega machine cannons sits in the skull's eye sockets.
How big is it?
Head height: 15.9 m per Bandai's official spec, at 9.5 t empty and 24.8 t fully loaded
1/144: roughly 11 cm

Frequently asked questions
1. What separates the X-3 from the X-1 and X-2?
The arm-mounted I-field generators, the Muramasa Blaster and the armoured chest with eye-socket cannons. Otherwise its performance is close to the earlier airframes.
2. Could the X-3 carry a beam shield as well?
It could mount one over the I-field generators, but never received it before its first sortie. It was never properly resupplied after that.
3. Why is the Muramasa Blaster limited?
It is a prototype that draws a great deal of energy, so it can only run for a short window. It stays usable as a physical blade when the emitters are off.
