Captain Formula 91 Jr.

Captain Formula 91 Jr. is CB-008 in Bandai's SD Gundam Chibi Senshi run, the small-format kits the company issued in March 1993. The character behind it is CAPF-91 Captain Formula 91 from SD Command Chronicles III: Super G-ARMS, the 1992 chapter that took the Command branch into space. It is an SD character rather than a machine from a Gundam animation, and what this release offers is a model of the character.

What it does in the story

Super G-ARMS moves the Command cast off their home planet and onto the battleship General for a war against Cosmo Zatarion. Captain Formula 91 is what Captain Gundam FF becomes when a system V Command had hidden inside him switches on, and it sits in the Super G-ARMS fleet for that war.

What makes it different

  • The kit rebuilds into a Star Griffin. Captain Formula 91 can turn into the holy beast Star Griffin, and the Chibi figure reproduces that by coming apart and reusing its parts as the beast, the way the other transformable kits in the run work.
  • It is a powered-up Captain Gundam FF. The character is Captain Gundam FF with a system V Command had installed running, not a new machine built from scratch. Its Grand Cross Buster draws on the energy of a nearby star.
  • The same character exists in a larger kit. Captain Formula 91 also appeared in the Ganso SD Gundam line as No. 117, a full-size kit rather than a 45 mm figure, so this release is one of two versions of the machine rather than the only one.
  • It came back in clear plastic with two siblings. Crystal Gundam Formulas, a multi-pack from February 1994, reissued this figure in transparent mouldings alongside Super Dragon Guardian Formulander Jr. and Captain Neo Gundam Jr. The Gundam Wiki records that all three of those kits depict the F91 Gundam F91.

How big is it?

  • Kit height: roughly 45 mm, the average for the Chibi Senshi range, which clips plates onto a polycap skeleton

Frequently asked questions

1. Which SD Command chapter is Captain Formula 91 from?

It is the third of the four Command chapters, from 1992, sitting between Gundam Force and Great Pankration in the run.

2. What does the kit turn into?

A Star Griffin. That is the holy beast form of the machine rather than a separate character, and the figure is taken apart and rebuilt as the creature using the same parts.

3. Is this a model of the Gundam F91?

No. It is a figure of an SD character whose design basis is the F91, and it stands about 45 mm tall. The resemblance is in the design language, not in the scale.

4. How does this differ from the Ganso SD No. 117 release?

Scale. No. 117 is the larger Ganso SD kit of Captain Formula 91, and CB-008 is the Chibi figure, built to the smaller range's proportions rather than to standard SD size.
