Calcifer

Calcifer is the fire demon who powers Howl's moving castle in Howl's Moving Castle, Hayao Miyazaki's 2004 Studio Ghibli film adapted from Diana Wynne Jones's 1986 novel. He lives in the castle hearth and keeps the whole structure moving.

What makes Calcifer stand out

• He is bound by a contract. Calcifer and Howl struck a bargain years before the film opens, and the fire is tied to Howl's heart. Calcifer wants out, so he offers Sophie a trade: break his contract and he will lift her curse.
• He was a falling star. Before the contract Calcifer was a star dropping to earth, caught by Howl before it went out. The film keeps that origin as the answer to what he actually is.
• Small, rude and domestic. He complains, negotiates and cooks. Much of his screen time happens over a frying pan, which is why so much of the merchandise around him is kitchenware.

What this collection covers

Benelic's Studio Ghibli line supplies nearly all of it, and it is goods rather than figures: a frying pan and a spatula, a coaster set, a tote bag, a hanging keychain, boxed swinging LED candles and a boxed Kazaring assortment. The soft side runs to a 13-inch plush. An Ensky 3D puzzle and a 208-piece Art Crystal jigsaw cover the build-it-yourself end.
