C-3PO

C-3PO, or See-Threepio, is a 3PO-series protocol droid from Star Wars, built from spare parts by Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and programmed for etiquette and protocol. He is fluent in over six million forms of communication and is almost always paired with the astromech R2-D2.

What it does in the story

C-3PO works as a translator and a witness rather than a fighter. He serves Padmé Amidala through the Clone Wars, then spends nineteen years with Bail Organa on the Tantive IV, and carries a copy of the Death Star plans when the Rebel Alliance takes him in. He later brings the Ewoks into the Battle of Endor.

What makes it different

• Gold plating, one odd leg. Humanoid coverings in gold, with a mismatched plate on the right lower leg that stayed for decades; the later rebuild gives him symmetrical plating and a third finger joint.
• Built to talk, not to fight. No weapons. Etiquette, protocol, translation and diplomacy are the whole toolkit, so he turns up at negotiations and briefings, not battles.
• The worry. Decades of operation produce a fussy, anxiety-prone personality. He narrates danger rather than answering it, and R2-D2 usually does the answering.

How big is it?

• 1/12 scale: Bandai's 1/12 kits build C-3PO at about 142 mm, with R2-D2 at about 91 mm in two-droid sets.
