James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is the sidekick Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created for Captain America Comics #1 in 1941, at Timely Comics. An Army brat raised at Camp Lehigh, he fights beside Steve Rogers. Sebastian Stan has played him since 2011.
What makes Bucky Barnes stand out
The death that stuck.
Readers had a saying that nobody stayed dead except Bucky, Jason Todd and Uncle Ben; Brubaker broke it.
Mascot, then operative.
He grew up at Camp Lehigh, smuggled goods for soldiers and showed a gift for marksmanship.
The cover story.
Brubaker's version says the boy-sidekick image was a cover, and Barnes began as a sixteen-year-old sent on covert work.
He carried the shield.
When Rogers was believed dead, Barnes took over as Captain America, with a pistol and knife alongside the shield.
What this collection covers
Both figures are the same man at different points. Kaiyodo's Amazing Yamaguchi Winter Soldier is the assassin in a dark tactical suit and metallic left arm; S.H.Figuarts Bucky Barnes follows the 2021 series.
