KUMA-03 Beargguy III

KUMA-03 Beargguy III is China Kousaka's custom Gunpla from Gundam Build Fighters (2013–14), built on the KUMA-02 Beargguy II. China is in her school's art club and the paintwork is the whole idea: a bear-shaped machine finished like a stuffed toy. It has no place in any Gundam timeline, because within the show it is a model and nothing else.

What it does in the story

China debuts it in Gunpla Battle and flies it on its oddities rather than its firepower, changing the model's expression mid-fight and letting its body take hits that should have ended the match. Its battle with the SD Knight Gundam is where the cotton packed inside the body turns a physical attack into something the suit simply absorbs. It also appears in Gundam Build Fighters: GM's Counterattack.

What makes it different

  • Three beam cannons, one of them in the mouth. Two sit in the extendable paws and one in the mouth, which has to open before it fires. The paw cannons can also generate beam sabers for close work.
  • Its face is a screen. An LCD panel above the mouth and nose changes the eye expression during a battle, so the model's face is a display rather than a moulded mask.
  • It is stuffed with cotton. China filled the body with cotton to match the idea of a plush toy turned robot. When the armour is pierced the stuffing expands and pushes back against some physical attacks, and it can be spat out of the mouth cannon to trap an opponent.
  • The ribbon on its back is a flight pack. The Ribbon Striker is a custom pack that works as a flight unit. Take it off and a hardpoint is exposed for other equipment, which is how the kit is meant to be customised.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Beargguy III a mobile suit?

It is a Gunpla, a custom model built on the Beargguy II inside Gundam Build Fighters, where the fights are between models rather than real machines.

2. Why does it have a screen for a face?

Because China wanted it to change expression mid-fight. The LCD panel sits above the mouth and nose, and it is used in battle rather than as a display feature.

3. How many beam cannons does it carry?

Three: two in the paws and one in the mouth. The two in the paws double as beam sabers, so the suit has no separate melee weapon.

4. What does the III in the name mean?

It is a pun on the Japanese suffix -san, which is why some translations render the name as Mr. Beargguy. KUMA in the model number is the Japanese word for bear.
