ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex carries the second half of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans season two (2016–2017, Post Disaster 325), again with Mikazuki Augus in the cockpit. It was built at Saisei's MS Workshop after the Lupus came back from the Hashmal battle too damaged to repair, with data from that fight sampled during the rebuild.
What it does in the story
It first fights in Tekkadan's attack on JPT Trust, the Teiwaz subsidiary run by Jasley Donomikols, clearing the company's mobile suits and ending the battle by destroying the bridge of Jasley's ship with the Ultra Large Mace. Sent to Earth for McGillis Fareed's coup, it helps disable the machines at Gjallarhorn headquarters and fights the Gundam Vidar until the Gundam Bael intervenes. In the fleet battle that follows it is kept tied up by the Reginlaze Julia, then leads Tekkadan's charge into the Arianrhod formation.
What makes it different
-
Its response speed was pushed to the frame's limit.
The rebuild raised response speed to the theoretical maximum of the frame, to match a pilot whose Alaya-Vijnana compatibility was still climbing. Joint movement was then tuned to what Mikazuki actually felt, rather than to a specification.
-
The cockpit now opens from the front.
Earlier Barbatos forms opened the hatch at the top. The Rex opens at the front, because Mikazuki's disabilities had worsened and climbing in from above was no longer workable.
-
A mobile armour's tail is part of the suit.
The tail of Hashmal was transplanted onto the Rex's back and fitted with a rare-metal blade, giving it a weapon that extends and retracts. Through the Alaya-Vijnana Mikazuki drives it as though it were another limb, which is what makes it useful against several opponents at once.
-
The hands and forearms are the main armament.
The arms were enlarged, elongated and reinforced until the suit read like an animal, and Rex Nails on the fingers, rare metal like the toes, turn the hands into weapons that pierce armour. Each forearm holds a built-in 200mm gun and a folding sub-arm, with pile bunkers in both heels.
How big is it?
- Overall height: 19.0 m according to Bandai's official spec, with an empty weight of 32.1 t
- 1/144: roughly 13 cm, which covers the HG Iron-Blooded Orphans kits
- 1/100: roughly 19 cm, which covers the Master Grade release

Frequently asked questions
1. What does Rex mean in the suit's name?
It is Latin for king. The kit manuals tie it to Orga Itsuka's ambition to become King of Mars, which is why the name was given to this rebuild.
2. Where did the Tail Blade come from?
It is built from the tail of Hashmal, the mobile armour the Lupus fought near Chryse, transplanted onto the Rex's back with a rare-metal blade added. The Alaya-Vijnana System lets the pilot move it like a limb.
3. Does the Rex keep the Lupus's mace?
No. Teiwaz's workshop built a new Ultra Large Mace with a telescopic handle and a pile bunker at each end, sized with enemy ships in mind.
4. How do the Rex's hands differ from the Lupus's?
The Lupus fought mainly with handheld weapons. The Rex's fingers carry Rex Nails and its arms were rebuilt larger so the hands work as weapons.
