ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos

ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos is the Gundam Frame at the centre of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (2015–2017), set roughly 300 years after the Calamity War. It is piloted by Mikazuki Augus and begins as the power source of the CGS security company, before the young crew takes the organisation over as Tekkadan.

What it does in the story

When Gjallarhorn attacks the CGS base, the youngest members start the Barbatos for the first time and Mikazuki takes the cockpit, going out with the suit's large mace. Its first rebuild follows the low-orbit station battle, where armour stripped from a captured Graze is fitted to both shoulders and the machine repainted blue and white.

What makes it different

• It spent decades as a generator, not a weapon. The Barbatos is a Gundam Frame left from the Calamity War 300 years before the story opens, and CGS had been running it as a power reactor. The machine that first walks out of the hangar runs on three-century-old armour.
• Every form is a repair, not a factory variant. The 2nd Form takes its shoulder armour from a captured Graze, the 3rd Form rebuilds a damaged left arm with a captured Schwalbe Graze's wire claw, and the 5th Form uses Montag parts and Ein's Schwalbe Graze thrusters. Bandai lists each as a variation of the same frame.
• The frame is the machine; the armour is consumable. The Gundam Frame and its Ahab Reactor are what the suit actually is, which is why plates and limbs can be replaced with salvage. The Master Grade reproduces that inner frame and reactor, with a rotating chest mechanism Bandai calls a first for the grade.
• The 4th Form survives mainly as a kit. Bandai's English mecha page lists the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 5th Ground Type and 6th Forms — no 4th. The 4th Form is the version the Master Grade 1/100 kit is built as.

How big is it?

• MGSD finished height: about 115 mm, according to Bandai's official spec for MGSD Gundam Barbatos; no finished height is published for the 1/144 or 1/100 kits, where 1/100 works out at about 1.44 times 1/144
