ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael

ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael is the first of the 72 Gundam Frames, built by Gjallarhorn near the end of the Calamity War in Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS' Post Disaster timeline. Agnika Kaieru flies the first frame during that war, and McGillis Fareed wakes it three hundred years later. The number 01 is why the machine carries the weight it does in the story.

What it does in the story

Bael is tied to the end of the Calamity War: Agnika's record in it is what made the Gundam Frames read as more than weapons, and the suit became a fixture of Gjallarhorn's self-image even while it sat in a basement hangar at Vingolf. McGillis reactivates it during his coup d'etat and later flies it against Gaelio Bauduin's Kimaris Vidar, with Isurugi Camice throwing his own machine between the two to pull Bael clear.

What makes it different

  • It carries two swords and little else. The Bael Swords are the suit's only handheld weapons, forged from the same rare metal as the Grimgerde's Valkyrja Blades. That being enough is read as evidence of how completely Agnika's Alaya-Vijnana link to the frame worked.
  • The swords are drawn by moving arms. Both blades sit in holders on the rear skirt armour, and the holders swing out on articulated arms so a sword reaches the suit's hand faster than a plain rack would allow.
  • Its wings carry guns. Each thruster wing has an electromagnetic cannon built into it, fired from an aperture on the wing's side. They are there to restrict an opponent's movement rather than to finish a fight.
  • It came out of the hangar unmodified. Two Ahab Reactors and Nanolaminate armour are the same specification it went in with, and the emblem on its left shoulder is Gjallarhorn's mark from the organisation's founding.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 18.0 m, with a dry weight of 30 t, per Bandai's published spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12.5 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 18 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Why does Gundam Bael only carry two swords?

Because that was the point of the machine. Agnika's compatibility with the frame through the Alaya-Vijnana System meant he did not need anything else, and the swords are described as unbreakable precisely so the loadout could stay that short.

2. How does Bael compare with the other 71 frames?

It is described as a fairly standard unit with little in the way of special features. What set it apart was its pilot and the fact that it was the first frame, not a heavier or more specialised specification.

3. Who has piloted Bael?

Agnika Kaieru during the Calamity War, and McGillis Fareed in P.D. 325 after he reactivated it. Between those two the suit stayed stored at Vingolf.

4. Does piloting Bael require an Alaya-Vijnana implant?

The frame is built around the system, which pairs a unit in the mobile suit with an implant in the pilot's spine. McGillis recreated the original version of the system through his own research and had it fitted to himself in order to fly it.
