ARL-99 Helldiver

The ARL-99 Helldiver is the airborne Labor of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force in Mobile Police Patlabor, built on the AV-98 frame for the mechanised airborne brigade.

What it does in the story

It is dropped, not driven: a parachute and braking rockets bring it down ahead of the paratroopers. Episode 11 debuts it with a knife through a Type-7 Brocken.

What makes it different

• The legs are the point. Actuators are beefed up, shock absorbers are rated for a parachute landing, and dive brakes in the legs bleed off descent speed.
• One gun, many fittings. A 40 mm rapid-fire gun and a combat knife are standard; a TOW launcher, smoke dischargers, night vision and a machine pistol were optional.
