AMX-107 Bawoo

AMX-107 Bawoo is Neo Zeon's transformable attack mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986, U.C. 0088). Axis engineers developed it with the Zeta Project in mind, and it separates into two flying halves, the Bawoo Attacker and the Bawoo Nutter. Glemy Toto tests the prototype; the production version is painted green.

What it does in the story

Axis engineers, unwilling to stay behind the transformable suits of the Gryps Conflict, built the Bawoo to see what the layout could do. Glemy's feedback persuaded the developers to keep the separation mechanism they had dropped, and the Nutter became a flying missile before production. Glemy's orange prototype and the green production machines serve through the First Neo Zeon War, and his splinter faction repaints some grey during his rebellion.

What makes it different

  • It comes apart into two aircraft. The Attacker is the torso, head, arms, backpack and weapons; the Nutter is the lower body, steered by Minovsky transmission as an independent drone. The Nutter makes a lifting body by deploying side skirt armour as canards and rotating its legs ninety degrees.
  • The lower half can be a missile. Used as a giant missile, the Nutter carries up to 1,800 kg over an effective range of 640 km, further than most beam cannons reach. It takes a conventional or nuclear warhead.
  • The shield carries five mega particle cannons. Rather than a plain plate, the Bawoo's shield mounts five mega particle cannons fed by a generator built into it. When the suit separates, the shield goes under the Attacker to improve its aerodynamics.
  • Its sabers put themselves into its hands. Two knight-type beam sabers are stored in the forearms and placed in the hands automatically when deployed. Each forearm also carries a four-tube grenade launcher for suppression and diversion, and three AMM-06H missiles can hang on each wing binder.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 22.05 m in mobile suit mode, with a head height of 18.5 m
  • Wingspan: 24.26 m for the Bawoo Attacker
  • Weight: 34.7 t empty and 67.5 t loaded in mobile suit mode
  • 1/144: roughly 15.3 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 22 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the difference between the Bawoo Attacker and the Bawoo Nutter?

The Attacker is the transformed upper half, carrying the cockpit, the beam rifle and the missiles, with the shield underneath. The Nutter is the lower half, which normally flies as a drone but can also be loaded as a missile.

2. Why does the Sleeves' Bawoo have two cockpits?

The original Nutter was remote-controlled only. The U.C. 0096 rebuild gave it its own cockpit so it could keep fighting if the Attacker was destroyed, and added vulcan guns, side-skirt machine cannons, a beam machine gun and twelve missiles instead of six.

3. Does the Bawoo transform on its own, or does it need the other half?

It needs both halves. In mobile suit mode they are docked as one machine, and the suit transforms by separating, so the Attacker is the flying form of the upper body.

4. Which version of the Bawoo appears in Gundam Unicorn?

The Sleeves' modified machine, repainted and marked with the group's insignia, with the extra guns and second cockpit. One fights the Nahel Argama's mobile suits at Industrial 7 during the Laplace Incident.
