AMX-104 R-Jarja

AMX-104 R-Jarja is a Neo Zeon prototype from Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986, U.C. 0088), built for senior officers rather than the rank and file. Neo Zeon calls those officers knights, and the suit was made by reworking a machine that inherited the design concept of the One Year War's YMS-15 Gyan. Chara Soon takes one of the units through the First Neo Zeon War.

What it does in the story

Chara takes her R-Jarja out against the AEUG ship Argama and its crew repeatedly, and in one engagement she pairs with Mashymre Cello's Hamma Hamma to badly damage Judau Ashta's Zeta Gundam. In U.C. 0096 a Mastema unit searching the wreckage of Axis finds another R-Jarja in a private dock, and Danton Hyleg, once a test pilot for the type, takes it out.

What makes it different

  • The shields are mounted on the shoulders. Two variable shields sit on the shoulders rather than on the forearms, and each can swivel 180 degrees to cover the front, the sides or the rear. Part of the shield flips forward or back so the arms keep their reach.
  • Each shield carries a missile pod. A triple missile pod is built into both shields, loaded with AMS-05M missiles and given a wide firing arc by the articulated shoulders. Thrusters in the shields also push the suit around, so the armour is doing three jobs at once.
  • The rifle has a heat blade under the barrel. A low-output heat bayonet sits beneath the beam rifle, able to cut away part of the Zeta Gundam's shield and detachable for use on its own. The rifle runs on a replaceable e-pac and has a bipod for steady fire.
  • The saber sheath recharges the saber. The beam saber has an oversized handguard and its own beam generator, and it rests in a scabbard at the waist that doubles as a charger between swings.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 23.55 m, or 20.0 m at the head, per Bandai's published spec
  • 1/144: roughly 16.4 cm, which covers the 1986 kit and the HGUC releases

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the R-Jarja a Gyan?

Not literally. It is a Neo Zeon rework of a machine built on the Gyan's design concept, and it keeps that suit's close-combat brief: shoulder shields with missile pods, a bayonet under the rifle, and a heavy saber instead of a general-purpose loadout.

2. Why is Chara Soon's R-Jarja red when others are not?

The red machine is the one viewers know, but at least one other unit appears in a different colour scheme, flown by Danton Hyleg in Twilight Axis. That difference is what the wiki cites as evidence more than one R-Jarja was built.

3. What is the beam machine gun listed for the R-Jarja?

A hand-carried beam weapon originally used by the AMS-119 Geara Doga. It appears in the manga version of Twilight Axis rather than in the animation.
