AMX-103 Hamma Hamma

AMX-103 Hamma Hamma, also listed as MS-38, is a Neo Zeon prototype built for senior officers in U.C. 0088, during the events of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986–1987). It served as a testbed for bringing psycommu technology to mass-produced machines, and Mashymre Cello flies the unit assigned to the Endra.

What it does in the story

Mashymre takes it to Side 1's Shangri-La colony while the Endra hunts the Argama and tries to recruit allies there. The Hamma Hamma does heavy damage to the AEUG's Zeta Gundam and takes off its head, then withdraws when the ZZ Gundam arrives to back the Zeta up. The type never left the prototype stage.

What makes it different

  • Its hands come off. The claw hands are wire-guided and detachable, each carrying a three-barrel beam gun rated 3.1 MW. The wires let the arms reach up to 50 m, and the design aimed at all-range attacks inside a 100 m radius.
  • Almost all of its power goes to the thrusters. The standard armament was deliberately kept to the remote weapons so the reactor could feed the suit's many thrusters, and the shield makes up the difference in firepower.
  • The quasi-psycommu did not work. In service the system was ineffective and never delivered the all-range attack the design promised. The technology was perfected later, in the Döven Wolf.
  • The shield is armour and arsenal at once. 300 mm of Gundarium with its own generator, carrying three beam guns at 1.8 MW, two beam sabers at 0.74 MW and eight space mines that detonate when a sensor picks up an enemy within 10 m.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 24.03 m, 21.5 m at the head, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 17 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 24 cm, the scale of the RE/100 kit

Frequently asked questions

1. Why did the Hamma Hamma's remote weapons fail?

The quasi-psycommu could not translate the pilot's intent cleanly, and even with computer support the wired weapons only moved in two dimensions.

2. How far can the wired arms reach?

Up to 50 m from the suit, according to the RE/100 kit's manual, which also gives the 100 m radius as the intended all-range envelope.

3. Is it a Newtype-use machine?

It uses a quasi-psycommu, the non-Newtype version of the system. That is why it was assigned to a high-ranking officer rather than to a Newtype pilot.
