AMA-X2 Neue Ziel

AMX-002 Neue Ziel, also listed as AMA-002 and AMA-X2, is a space-use prototype mobile armour rather than a mobile suit, built by Axis engineers under Haman Karn's direction for Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1991–1992, U.C. 0083). The Axis fleet hands it to Anavel Gato — the “Nightmare of Solomon” — as a gesture of goodwill.

What it does in the story

The Axis advanced fleet brings the armour to the Earth Sphere as unofficial support for Delaz's Operation Stardust, and Gato uses it to clear the path in the operation's final stage. There it fights the Federation's RX-78GP03 Gundam Dendrobium to a standstill, its I-field shrugging off beam fire while the wired claws answer.

What makes it different

  • It is a mobile armour, and the size shows it. The Neue Ziel stands 76.6 m tall and 73.6 m wide, and displaces 403.5 t fully loaded. Thrusters are spread across the whole body, so that much mass still moves.
  • Four I-field generators cover it completely. Two sit in the shoulder armour and two in the tail skirt armour, giving 360-degree protection against beam weapons instead of shielding one approach.
  • Its wire-guided claws let a non-Newtype fight like one. The “half-control” system has the computer steer the wired claw arms, so Gato can run a multi-directional all-range attack; each claw also carries a mega particle cannon that can emit a beam saber. It is still a heavy load on the pilot.
  • The gun list is closer to a warship's. A waist mega cannon wired straight to the generator, nine mega particle cannons, four large missile launchers and banks of small missile tubes, plus two sub-arms hidden in the shoulder armour.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 76.6 m tall and 73.6 m across, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/550: roughly 14 cm, the scale of the High Grade Mechanics kit of this machine

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Neue Ziel a mobile suit?

No. It is a mobile armour: no humanoid frame, a cockpit in the main body, and space-only operation. That is why it is sized and armed like a small warship rather than a duelling machine.

2. How can a non-Newtype use its remote weapons?

Through the half-control system, where a computer guides the wired arms instead of the pilot's thoughts. That is what lets Gato perform an all-range attack, though it still costs him.

3. What are the two tanks on its back for?

They mount at the back of the waist and carry extra propellant for the rocket thrusters, adding speed and range. Once empty they can be ejected.

4. Where does the name come from?

Neue Ziel is German for “new goal” or “new target”. Designer Mika Akitaka shaped the machine on a swallowtail butterfly with its wings spread.
