2B

2B, full designation YoRHa No. 2 Type B, is the android at the centre of NieR:Automata, the 2017 action RPG from PlatinumGames and Square Enix. The B stands for Battler: she is a front-line unit of YoRHa, the android force fighting the Machine Lifeforms holding Earth. Akihiko Yoshida designed her for director Yoko Taro.

What makes 2B stand out

• A silhouette built to be recognised. Black dress, white hair, and a visor across the eyes. The No Goggles releases exist so the same character sells again with her eyes visible.
• Swords, and a Pod. She fights at close range with swords while Pod 042 provides covering fire. The pairing is why her combat poses show a second presence in the frame.
• The design brief is the story. YoRHa androids fight a proxy war for humans who are no longer present, against machines built by an absent alien force. The formality is the point: soldiers dressed for a war nobody watches.
• Licensees reinterpret her. Not every release is game-accurate. The 1/4 Japanese Doll version, the B-Style bunny and the FLARE 2.0 are readings rather than reproductions of the in-game model.
