Metal Build vs Robot Spirits vs Metal Robot Spirits: Gundam Action Figures Explained
METAL BUILD, ROBOT SPIRITS and METAL ROBOT SPIRITS are three lines of finished Gundam action figures from Tamashii Nations, the collector-figure brand of Bandai Spirits. Unlike Gunpla, which are model kits you build, these come out of the box as completed figures. The difference between them is size and material: METAL BUILD is the large die-cast flagship, ROBOT SPIRITS is the compact plastic line, and METAL ROBOT SPIRITS puts die-cast parts into a figure close to ROBOT SPIRITS size.
Gundam Action Figures vs Gunpla
Gunpla are plastic model kits that you assemble yourself. The lines in this guide are a different product category. Tamashii Nations describes METAL BUILD as a "finished toy brand" (完成品トイブランド), and its GUNDAM UNIVERSE and METAL ROBOT SPIRITS product pages also call those figures finished products. There is nothing to build: you open the box, attach the accessories, and pose. If you want the build itself, our Gunpla grade guide covers HG, RG, MG and PG.

METAL BUILD
METAL BUILD is the large line. Tamashii Nations says the brand pursues the ultimate fusion of "the strengths of Chogokin" with "design arrangements suited to each work," shaped by a range of outside creators. It adds that alloy is kept off the surface for the most part, with metal left exposed on purpose in places, and that sculpting is arranged for articulation and the figures are designed to feel heavy. The Gundam Wiki dates the line to 2011, with the 00 Gundam Seven Sword as its first release.
Two examples show what the line looks like today. The METAL BUILD Zeta Gundam is listed at about 190 mm in ABS, PVC and die-cast, with a transformation into Wave Rider mode; it comes with a beam rifle, a shield, two beam sabers, interchangeable hands and a dedicated display stand. The METAL BUILD Hi-ν Gundam, based on the Hi-ν design from the novel Char's Counterattack: Beltorchika's Children, is listed at about 205 mm and includes six fin funnels, a beam rifle, a New Hyper Bazooka, a shield and a stand.
Scale: Tamashii Nations does not give METAL BUILD a scale. The Gundam Wiki describes the line as non-scale and notes that the Gundams stand at roughly the height of their 1/100 Gunpla counterparts. The line is not Gundam-only either; Tamashii's brand page also lists METAL BUILD Hatsune Miku, Kamen Rider Zero-One and Nirvash type ZERO, and Full Metal Panic! mecha such as the Laevatein have been released in it. Browse the METAL BUILD collection.
ROBOT SPIRITS (ROBOT魂)
ROBOT SPIRITS is Tamashii Nations' long-running robot figure line. Tamashii describes it as robot figures for collectors, built from the technology Tamashii Nations has built up and a "love of robots," combining CAD work with craftsmen's sculpting. Gundam figures carry the "SIDE MS" label. The Gundam Wiki dates the first SIDE MS release, the 00 Gundam, to October 2008, and notes that the line is non-scale but many mobile suits come out close to the height of their 1/144 Gunpla counterparts.
Most current Gundam releases belong to the ver. A.N.I.M.E. sub-series, which the Gundam Wiki says began in 2016 with the RX-78-2 Gundam. Tamashii describes ver. A.N.I.M.E. as figures with anime-style proportions, dense sculpting and joints built for memorable on-screen action, so you can "play out scenes from the show." The ROBOT SPIRITS GAT-X103 Buster Gundam ver. A.N.I.M.E. is a good example: about 125 mm tall in ABS and PVC, with its two large guns linking into one weapon as in the show, plus missile and shotgun effect parts and four pairs of interchangeable hands.
ROBOT SPIRITS also covers far more than Gundam; the Gundam Wiki lists SIDE KMF for Code Geass, SIDE AS for Full Metal Panic!, SIDE EVA for Evangelion and many others. Browse the ROBOT SPIRITS collection.
METAL ROBOT SPIRITS (METAL ROBOT魂)
METAL ROBOT SPIRITS sits between the two. Tamashii Nations calls it a "double-name brand" that merges the die-cast heft of Chogokin with ROBOT SPIRITS, and says it balances "texture" and "articulation," with paint applications themed around a metallic, weighty look. In practice that means figures close to ROBOT SPIRITS size with die-cast parts in the joints and frame. The Gundam Wiki dates the brand to 2015.
The METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Strike Freedom Gundam [Re:Coordinate] is listed at about 140 mm in ABS, die-cast and PVC; Tamashii says its die-cast joint mechanisms give a wide, stable range of motion, and it includes eight DRAGOON units with a display joint for showing them deployed. The METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Red Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is about 155 mm, uses die-cast parts in the shoulder and hip structure, and comes with a beam rifle, shield, two bits and a hammer with a metal chain. Tamashii also lists Ka signature as part of the ROBOT SPIRITS family, a project with designer Hajime Katoki. Browse the METAL ROBOT SPIRITS collection.
For a side-by-side look at the same suits as an HG kit and as a METAL ROBOT SPIRITS figure, creator Oakii compares the Mighty Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice Type II in both formats in this video sponsored by P-Rex Hobby. Our HG Gunpla vs METAL ROBOT SPIRITS comparison lays out the official specs for both pairs.
GUNDAM UNIVERSE: The Entry Point
If the three lines above are more figure than you need, GUNDAM UNIVERSE is Tamashii's entry-level Gundam action figure line. Tamashii describes it as a Gundam action figure series in the global-standard 6-inch format, with dynamic sculpting that balances easy play and durability. Spec sheets put the RX-78-2 Gundam Renewal at about 150 mm and the Gundam Epyon at about 155 mm, both in ABS and PVC. Since 2025 the line has used a new frame, the "UNIVERSAL REACTION FRAME," which Tamashii says widens the range of motion. Accessories stay simple: the Epyon comes with its beam sword, heat rod, shield and interchangeable hands. Browse the GUNDAM UNIVERSE collection.
How to Choose
- You want one showpiece for the shelf: METAL BUILD. It is the largest of the four, uses die-cast parts, and each release gets a designer's take on the suit.
- You want to collect a whole cast: ROBOT SPIRITS ver. A.N.I.M.E. The figures share the same anime-style proportions, so a lineup of suits from one show displays well together.
- You want die-cast weight but have limited space: METAL ROBOT SPIRITS. You get metal joints and a metallic finish in a figure not much taller than ROBOT SPIRITS.
- You are buying a first Gundam figure, or a gift: GUNDAM UNIVERSE. It is the entry point, made for easy posing and durability.
- You want to build it yourself: skip all four and look at Gunpla instead.
Price follows the same order. Using Tamashii Nations' Japanese suggested retail as a guide, GUNDAM UNIVERSE is the entry tier, ROBOT SPIRITS is a step up, METAL ROBOT SPIRITS is a further step up, and METAL BUILD is the premium tier. Check each product page for current pricing.
FAQ
What is a Gundam Metal Build?
METAL BUILD is a line of finished, die-cast Gundam action figures by Tamashii Nations, Bandai Spirits' collector-figure brand. Each figure is designer-arranged, uses ABS, PVC and die-cast parts, and comes with weapons and a display stand. Recent Gundam releases are listed at about 190 to 205 mm tall.
Are Gundam Metal Builds worth it?
It depends on what you want. If you want one large, heavy display figure with a designer's arrangement of a suit you love, METAL BUILD is built for that. If you want to collect many suits, ROBOT SPIRITS or GUNDAM UNIVERSE is the better fit.
How much do Metal Build Gundams cost?
METAL BUILD is the premium tier of Tamashii Nations' Gundam figures, above METAL ROBOT SPIRITS, ROBOT SPIRITS and GUNDAM UNIVERSE. Prices vary by release; check the product page for the current price.
Are Metal Build Gundams pre-built?
Yes. Tamashii Nations describes METAL BUILD as a finished toy brand. Unlike Gunpla, there is no assembly; you only attach accessories and pose the figure.
