XM-X2 Crossbone Gundam X-2

XM-X2 Crossbone Gundam X-2 is the second of three F97 testbeds the Earth Federation's Strategic Naval Research Institute built and quietly handed to the Crossbone Vanguard in U.C. 0133, in the manga Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam. The designations XM-X1 to XM-X3 were cover codes for that transfer rather than honour titles. Zabine Chareux flies the X-2, and Tobia Arronax ends up in its cockpit.

What it does in the story

The X-2 begins the story on the Vanguard's side and finishes it with the Jupiter Empire, after Zabine defects. The Empire stages a gladiator match between the X-2 and a captured Tobia, and Tobia escapes by climbing into the suit's core fighter and flying it out. The Empire then rebuilds the captured airframe into the X-2 Kai.

What makes it different

  • It carries a lance built for colony fighting. A beam hit inside a colony can set off an enemy suit's reactor, so the Shot Lancer drives an electromagnetically accelerated tip through armour instead, and the spearhead itself can be launched like a missile. The X-2's version adds four heavy machine guns.
  • Beam zanber and buster gun join into a rifle. The zanber is a high-power beam saber with a cutlass-shaped hilt, and the buster gun is a pistol styled after a flintlock. Connected at the emitter they make the zanbuster, and a grenade on the emitter turns it into a single-shot launcher.
  • The core fighter keeps the propulsion. The plug-in core block carries the cockpit, the two shoulder beam sabers and the X-shaped thrusters, so the escape craft inherits the suit's main drive. That is what makes the gladiator escape possible.
  • The Kai is this airframe, not a new suit. The Jupiter Empire fixed a cockpit and the X-shaped thrusters permanently to the captured X-2 and added extra thrusters, which is why the X-2 Kai keeps its model number. It is a conversion of one machine.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 15.9 m, with an empty weight of 9.5 t and 24.8 t fully loaded, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 11 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 16 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. How is the X-2 different from the X-1?

Same F97 design, separate airframe and a different pilot: Zabine Chareux rather than Kincade Nau, with a Shot Lancer mounting four heavy machine guns. The X-2 also changes sides partway through the story.

2. Why does the Shot Lancer exist?

Beam fire inside a space colony risks blowing an enemy suit's reactor, so the Vanguard wanted a weapon that punches through armour without that. The lance accelerates its tip electromagnetically and can fire the spearhead.

3. Who flew the X-2?

Zabine Chareux flew it as a Vanguard pilot and kept it after defecting to the Jupiter Empire. Tobia Arronax got into it during the Empire's gladiator match and used the core fighter to get away.
