XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1

XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1 is one of four F97 suits built by the Earth Federation's Strategic Naval Research Institute and handed to the Crossbone Vanguard in Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam (U.C. 0133). Seabook Arno flies it under the name Kincade Nau, with Berah Ronah leading the organisation, and the four airframes were recoded to disguise the transfer.

What it does in the story

It is the flagship of the revived Crossbone Vanguard's war with the Jupiter Empire. Its defining battle is the raid on the Empire's base on Io, where President Crux Dogatie's headquarters proves to be a trap with the reactor set to detonate; Kincade takes the suit inside, cuts through the Vagon units sent to stop him and shuts the reactor down.

What makes it different

• The thrusters are arranged for Jupiter, not Earth. Under Jupiter's gravity a body-wide layout would need a bigger reactor and a heavier suit, so the F97 uses four movable thrusters in an X-shaped array, which lock into one column for top speed. Near Earth the result is hard to control.
• The beam shield doubles as a punching weapon. Forearm generators form four short blades that meet at the centre, giving the barrier a pyramidal shape. Slid over the fist the assembly becomes the brand marker, which leaves an X-shaped hole in whatever it fails to destroy.
• Its main protection is a cloak. The anti-beam coating cloak stows on the back and unfolds to cover the suit except the head, taking about five beam shots without drawing power and adding stealth. It does nothing against physical weapons.
• The close-combat loadout was chosen to spare cockpits. Berah Ronah wanted the war fought with minimal loss of life, and a blade can disable a suit without destroying the cockpit. Hence the beam zanber, whose blade cuts through an ordinary beam saber's, and heat daggers heated by waste heat from the legs.
