RGM-96X Jesta

RGM-96X Jesta is a limited-production special-operations mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (U.C. 0096). Anaheim Electronics developed it from the RGM-89 Jegan for Londo Bell, and its assignment was to escort the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam.

What it does in the story

In U.C. 0096 twelve Jestas were assigned to Londo Bell's flagship Ra Cailum for evaluation. Three, flown by the ship's Tri-Stars Team, deployed on Base Jabbers to help the defenders of Torrington Base during the Zeon remnant assault.

What makes it different

  • It exists because the Unicorn cannot stay in Destroy Mode. The Unicorn's operating time in Destroy Mode is limited, so the Jesta was built to escort it and clear ordinary enemy forces, creating the situations in which the Unicorn can confront Newtype weapons directly.
  • Its output is far above a Jegan's. The profile puts the Jesta at 90 per cent of the RX-93 ν Gundam's performance, with a backpack built for the thrust needed to keep up with the Unicorn. The type is a product of the UC Project, a fact kept hidden even inside the Federation forces.
  • The shield rides on the backpack. It hangs on a movable arm attached to the backpack and sits over the back while the suit rides a sub-flight unit. Two 2-tube missile launchers are built into it for mid-range work against mobile suits.
  • The rifle has a rapid-fire mode. The barrel is longer than a standard beam rifle's because of the acceleration and deflection device, and besides single shots it fires in a beam-machine-gun mode. Magazines use the same connector as the Jegan and ReZEL rifles, and three spares sit on the right forearm.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 19.3 m, listed the same at the head and overall, according to Bandai's published spec
  • 1/144: roughly 13.4 cm, which covers the HGUC kit
  • 1/100: roughly 19.3 cm, which covers the Master Grade

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Jesta a Jegan variant?

It was developed from the Jegan by Anaheim Electronics, but it is a separate limited-production special-operations machine with much higher output. It can still use the Jegan's standard beam rifle when needed.

2. Why does the Jesta carry three spare magazines?

Because the rifle is built for volume of fire. The spares sit on the right forearm, opposite the beam saber on the left forearm, and expansion parts can be fitted for extra capability.

3. Who are the Tri-Stars Team?

A three-machine unit aboard the Ra Cailum that flew Jestas during the Torrington Base battle. The pilots listed for the type include Nigel Garrett, Daryl McGuinness and Watts Stepney.

4. Where does the Jesta keep its beam saber?

On the left forearm, not in a backpack rack. It also carries six hand grenades, three in a rack on each side of the waist, which can be launched straight from the rack.
