RX-9 Narrative Gundam is the machine at the centre of Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative (2018, U.C. 0097), built by Anaheim Electronics for the Earth Federation and flown by Jona Basta of the Shezarr unit. It was a prototype for the RX-93 ν Gundam, and many of its parts are shared with it.
What it does in the story
The Federation commits it to Operation Phoenix Hunt, the attempt to recover the runaway RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex. Wearing the colony-use B-Packs it fights the MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein at the Metis colony, and with the C-Packs fitted it faces the NZ-999 II Neo Zeong at the Helium-3 storage base.
What makes it different
-
Much of the frame is left uncovered.
The suit was built to gather data rather than to fight, so large areas never received armour and the inner frame stays visible. Its only fixed weapon in base form is a pair of 60 mm vulcan guns in the head; everything heavier comes from armament sets supplied by Luio & Co.
-
The B-Packs carry wire-guided assault units.
A backpack holds two remote units on cables, which Jona calls Incoms. They fire beam shots from their centres and can ram, and once the NT-D takes over the cables can be cut so they work wirelessly. Each also carries a Psycho Jammer meant to trap the Phenex inside an octahedral field.
-
The C-Packs are Psycho-Frame bolted on as armour.
No such configuration was ever planned. Luio & Co. gathered the Psycho-Frame on its own and the conversion was done in a hurry, which is why the result is nicknamed the Psycho Package. Its shield has Psycho-Frame on the face plus a beam cannon and four missiles on the back.
-
The cockpit is a detachable Core Block.
There is no 360-degree panoramic monitor. The cockpit sits inside a Core Block that can separate and fly as a Core Fighter in an emergency, and the suit also carries an NT-D system that was fitted without telling the pilot.
How big is it?
- Overall height: 21.0 m
- 1/144: roughly 14.6 cm

Frequently asked questions
1. What separates the A, B and C-Packs?
Three armament sets were prepared for the Phoenix Hunt. The A-Packs are the high-mobility set, the B-Packs add wire-guided assault units for fighting inside a colony, and the C-Packs drop the optional armour in favour of Psycho-Frame.
2. Why is so much of the Narrative Gundam unarmoured?
It was a testbed for the Psycho-Frame that ended up in the ν Gundam, not a combat design. Armour would have added weight and cost without improving the data, so the frame was left open and weapons were added only when the operation demanded them.
3. Does the Narrative Gundam run the NT-D system?
Yes, and the pilot was not told. The system reads Newtype brainwaves through the Psycho-Frame and seizes control when it finds them, raises the suit's performance and tries to hijack enemy Newtype weapons. It cannot tell a real Newtype from a Cyber Newtype, and it will attack whether or not the pilot agrees.
4. What happens to the Core Block in an emergency?
The cockpit section separates from the torso and flies as a Core Fighter, which is the escape route built into the design. The rest of the machine stays behind, so the block is a way out for the pilot rather than a way to keep fighting.
