NRX-0013 Gundam Virsago

NRX-0013 Gundam Virsago is the machine flown by Shagia Frost in After War Gundam X (1996, A.W. 0015). The Government Reconstruction Committee developed it, and the New United Nations Earth operates it as a prototype assault suit ahead of the invasion.

What it does in the story

Shagia uses it across North America to gather intelligence before the New UN Earth forces move, then to hunt the Freeden and its Gundams. Between fights he stands it on his brother Olba's Ashtaron in mobile armour mode, letting the pair travel without spending the Virsago's propellant.

What makes it different

  • The main gun is in the belly. The mega sonic cannon fires either one concentrated beam or a spread of diffused beams across several targets. Recoil is heavy enough that the suit anchors itself on its strike claws before firing.
  • The claws reach further than the arms. The forearms extend, and the strike claws tear armour open at a distance. A small beam cannon sits between the claws of each hand, so an extended arm is a ranged mounting as well as a melee one.
  • It carries its own power for the cannon. At introduction the mega sonic cannon was the second most powerful weapon system on a mobile suit, behind the satellite cannon, but it runs off the suit's reactor where that cannon needs an outside supply.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 17.8 m, with an empty weight of 8.1 t, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 18 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. How is the Virsago different from the Virsago Chest Break?

The Chest Break is the rebuilt form it takes after repeated defeats, with a different silhouette and heavier armament. The NRX-0013 is the original as it first appears.

2. Why does Shagia ride on the Ashtaron?

Standing on his brother's Ashtaron in mobile armour mode lets him cover ground without burning propellant. The Virsago can fly on its own, but the two work as a pair.

3. Does the Virsago have the Flash System?

No. It is based on the GB-9700 Gundam Belphagor, but that machine's Flash System is not fitted, so the Virsago is flown as a conventional suit.
