GX-9900 Gundam X

GX-9900 Gundam X is the United Nations Earth's limited-production Gundam-type from After War Gundam X (1996, After War, A.W. 0015), built at the end of the 7th Space War as a decisive weapon. Jamil Neate flew one as a fifteen-year-old Newtype in that war, and Garrod Ran flies an intact unit fifteen years later.

What it does in the story

The Gundam X was committed to the attempt to stop the Space Revolutionary Army's mass colony drop, and Jamil used one with its GX-Bits to break up a colony on approach. The drop went ahead anyway, and his suit came out of the war missing its head and left arm. In A.W. 0015 Garrod Ran finds a complete machine in an abandoned facility and starts it with a G-Controller taken from Jamil's cabin.

What makes it different

  • Its main gun is powered from the Moon. The Satellite Cannon runs on Super Microwave energy beamed from a solar facility on the lunar surface, stored in the backpack and fed through conductors running across the frame. A full charge is good for two or three shots, and one round is described as enough to destroy a colony.
  • By the time the series opens, the gun rarely works. The relay stations in lunar orbit that carried the beam had been destroyed or disabled by A.W. 0015. With no relay left, the cannon can only be fired when the Moon is visible from the battlefield.
  • It can fly a squad of Bit mobile suits. The Flash System amplifies a Newtype's thought waves, registers the suit with the Satellite System, and lets the pilot control up to twelve FX-9900 GX-Bits at once. Those Bits are themselves Satellite System machines, so the Gundam X can work as a small formation rather than a single unit.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 17.1 m according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12 cm, covering the HGAW kit
  • 1/100: roughly 17 cm, covering the Master Grade

Frequently asked questions

1. What is a G-Controller?

It is the activation and control key for the Gundam and the trigger for the Satellite Cannon. Garrod could not start the suit he found until he realised the control stick he had taken from Jamil's cabin was the missing unit.

2. How long can the Gundam X fight without firing the cannon?

Up to a week, according to the Master Grade manual, because the backpack and body conductors can feed the beam sword and rifle as well as the cannon.

3. Is the Gundam X Divider a different machine?

It is the same airframe rebuilt. After the suit was badly damaged by Carris Nautilus and his Bertigo, Freeden chief mechanic Kid Salsamille reworked it into the Divider.

4. What is the Shield Buster Rifle?

A weapon that switches between rifle and shield by folding the grip and extending an armour cover. In shield form its shell is three times as tough as an ordinary rifle's, and it recharges from the backpack's Satellite System feed.
