Discover the iconic Saab 29, affectionately known as "The Flying Barrel," a masterpiece of Swedish engineering from the 1950s. Crafted by the renowned Saab, this fighter jet carved its niche as Sweden's second turbojet-powered combat aircraft, following the trailblazing Saab 21R. Despite its distinctive, rounded design, the J 29 was celebrated for its speed and agility, proving to be a formidable force in both fighter and fighter-bomber roles well into the 1970s.
The J-29F Fighter variant, a remarkable transformation of 308 aircraft from the B and E model airframes between 1954 and 1956, incorporated the powerful afterburning Ghost engine and a distinctive dog-tooth wing. In a significant upgrade in 1963, all remaining aircraft were equipped to launch a pair of AIM-9B Sidewinder heat-seeking air-to-air missiles, the Rb 24, manufactured under license by SAAB.
