Discover the iconic KrAZ-260, a pivotal heavy utility truck that began its journey in the early 1980s, taking over from the KrAZ-255B at the Kremenchug Motor Vehicle Plant. This remarkable vehicle, kept under wraps until 1985, made its public debut towing 152-mm 2A36 nuclear-capable field guns during a Red Square parade. Designed to handle immense loads, the KrAZ-260 boasts a towing capacity of up to 10,000 kg when fully loaded and an impressive 30,000 kg when empty. The Red Square parade showcased a unique open body configuration with forward-facing bench seats, though its standard design features a conventional cargo body with a tailgate, all protected by a tilt cover. Equipped with a winch for forward or rearward recovery, including self-recovery, this truck is built for versatility.
The KrAZ-260's design shares similarities with its predecessor, the KrAZ-255B, but introduces a more angular bonnet to accommodate its turbocharged diesel engine, alongside slightly larger overall dimensions. Primarily produced for military use within the Soviet Union, the KrAZ-260 has not been widely distributed to foreign armed forces. Known variants include the KrAZ-260V tractor truck, designed for towing a range of semi-trailers and platforms carrying S-300 missiles, and the KrAZ-240. The KrAZ-260V, with its 6x4 drive configuration and extended wheelbase, offers an on-road load capacity of 16.8 tons, making it ideal for long-range logistic support. In 1999, the KrAZ-6322 succeeded this heavy-duty utility truck, marking the end of an era.
