F-104は、超音速制空戦闘機として、開発された機体です。小型軽量の機体で大推力エンジンを搭載し最大速度マッハ2をだすF-104は当時、最後の有人戦闘機と言われました。しかしその後のアメリカ空軍の方針が変わり小型なためデータリンクなどを搭載できないF-104は少数配備に終わりました。しかし、火器管制システムを中心に電子機器を一新し、垂直尾翼、方向舵を大型化したF-104Gがヨーロッパで共同生産された他、ロッキード社、カナデア社で生産され、NATO諸国で使用されました。また、イタリア空軍の要求により開発されたF-104Sは推力5,380kg（A/B使用時8,120kg）のJ79-GE-19エンジンにかえ、AIM-7スパローを装備可能にし、レーダーをR-21Gに変更して全天候要撃能力を高めると同時に、ハードポイントを9箇所設け外部兵器搭載量を増やし対地攻撃力も強化しました。なお、航空自衛隊で使用した、F-104J、復座型のF-104DJは1985年に米国に返還後、台湾に供与されました。 《F-104Gのデータ》乗員：1名全幅：6.69m全長：17.75m全高：4.11m最大離陸重量：12,410kgエンジン：ジェネラル・エレクトリック J-79-GE-11A推力：4,550kg（アフターバーナー使用時7,170kg×2）最大速度：マッハ 2.0 / 21,200m固定武装：M61 20mm バルカン砲初飛行：1954.2.28（原型機 XF-104）
