MG 1/100 Vidar Gundam Kit Review: Detailed Review, Features, and Build Impressions
When Bandai officially announced the MG 1/100 Gundam Vidar, fans of Iron-Blooded Orphans and Gunpla modelers alike were eager to see how the Master Grade line would handle one of IBO’s more mysterious suits. After years without a “mainline” IBO MG release, Vidar brings a fresh blend of sleek aesthetics, mechanical detail, and build features. In this review, we’ll walk you through what’s inside the box, how building it feels, articulation, pros & cons, final thoughts, and of course — where you can grab one from P-Rex Hobby.

What’s in the Box & First Impressions
Opening the box, you’ll typically find:
- Multiple runners (sprues) with inner-frame, armor, and weapon parts
- Polycap runners
- A detailed instruction manual
- Sticker/decals sheet
My first impression was that Bandai has clearly put effort into color separation and mechanical styling. The outer armor pieces are crisp, and the inner frame parts show visible pistons and mechanical detail. The manual is well laid out, making it easy to follow each step without confusion.
From unboxings and reviews, the rifle’s magazine is detachable and the handgun includes an “MG original gimmick” that simulates blowback motion. These little touches add a lot of charm to the kit right off the bat.

Building Experience
Below is a breakdown of how the build experience flows through each major section.
Head Unit
The head is one of the easier sub-assemblies. Parts are well separated; you rarely have to rely on stickers for yellow or accent portions. The visor and vents fit cleanly, and construction is straightforward if you’ve built MGs before.

Body / Chest Unit
This is where the inner frame really shines. As you assemble the torso frame, you’ll see exposed mechanical detail, pistons, and structural supports. The outer armor locks onto the frame solidly. One minor quirk: some armor pieces are tight to snap in, so you’ll want careful trimming of nubs. The front skirts and side skirts integrate well, though their movement range is somewhat limited by the bulk.

Arms
The arm build is solid. Joints move smoothly, and the shoulder armor has articulation to allow raising the arms outward. You’ll find that the inner skeleton gives strength to support the weight of weapons. The elbows bend decently, though some outer armor may slightly limit full travel in extreme poses.

Waist
Waist construction is stable. The kit gives you separate thruster parts (especially the yellow accents) and decent detail in that region. The side skirts and front skirts have limited articulation, which is a bit restrictive when posing high-kicks or deep lunges, but manageable. The connection to the leg joints is firm.

Legs
Legs are well engineered—inner frame, pistons, and multiple segments of outer armor. The articulation is good for normal poses. However, when pushing extreme poses, the leg thrusters (especially rear ones) are known to risk popping off, so extra care or glue might help. The ankle joints are solid and help stabilize the kit in dynamic stances.

Weapons & Accessories
Vidar comes with a rich arsenal:
- Handguns with blowback gimmick
- A rifle whose magazine can detach
- Burst saber
- Sheath or storage for weapons on skirts
- Extra manipulators
- Thrusters and accent parts
The design allows multiple mounting options. For example, the rifle can be stored in three different slots on the side skirts. The burst saber can be held in hand or sheathed. These features make customization and posing more flexible.

Articulations
One of the most important aspects of an MG is how well it can pose. With the MG Vidar:
- The neck and head have a good range — you can tilt, nod, and twist adequately.
-
Shoulders allow outward and upward motion, thanks to articulating armor pieces.
-
Elbows bend decently, though the outer armor sometimes limits extreme bends.
-
Waist and torso can twist and tilt modestly, though heavy armor restricts some motion.
-
Hips & legs allow for typical poses such as knee raises, splits, and forward lunges, but deep back-bends or ridiculously wide spreads may be constrained.
- Ankles and feet are well-engineered, giving stability even during dynamic poses.
Weapon articulation: some gimmicks (like the handgun blowback) and removable magazines add realism to your posed scenes. The kit’s joints are sturdy and resistant to sloppiness — though, as others mention, the back leg thrusters may be a weak spot and might need reinforcement.
Overall, for a complex kit with considerable armor, the MG Vidar performs admirably in terms of poseability.

Thoughts
As a modeler, I found the MG 1/100 Gundam Vidar to be a satisfying build. It offers a sweet spot between complexity and fun, with lots of mechanical detail and satisfying articulation. While not perfect, the issues are mostly small and manageable for those who take care (or who love modding).
In the broader context, this MG is an excellent revitalization for the IBO line in the Master Grade class. It shows Bandai is still willing to push design and engineering boundaries. For fans of Vidar or IBO in general, it’s almost a must-have to display alongside other MGs from the series.
If I were recommending this kit to someone: for intermediate and advanced builders, it’s a joy — and even beginners with patience can tackle it as long as they take their time and cautiously handle tricky sections.
