HG 1/144 Infinite Justice Gundam Type II Kit Review – The Shining Upgrade from SEED Freedom
The HG 1/144 Infinite Justice Gundam Type II is a new and improved model kit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, released in June 2024. This updated version of the classic Infinite Justice features enhanced articulation, metallic gloss parts, and refined mechanical details. Its standout feature is the new X-wing-style “Volantes” backpack, along with redesigned head, body, and better color separation for a sharper overall look.
In this review, we’ll go through the unboxing experience, building process, articulation, pros & cons, final thoughts — and, of course, where you can get one at P-Rex Hobby. Let’s dive in!

What’s in the Box & First Impressions
When you open the box, here’s what you’ll find:
- Several runners for the main body, internal frame, and armor
- A decal/sticker sheet (for small markings)
- A lead wire (to replicate the anchor’s firing state)
- Weapon parts: beam rifle, beam sabers (×2), shield, beam shield, plus effect parts for the wings and head
- Instructions manual
My first impression: the kit feels well packaged, the plastic is crisp, and the metallic silver parts stand out with a good gloss injection. The separation between runners is smart, reducing excessive waste or overlapping parts. Some of the runners (H1, H2) are reused from the original HGCE Infinite Justice.
Mecha Alliance
The metallic finish is attractive and catches light nicely, giving the build a premium look before even starting.

Building Experience
Overall, building this kit is pleasurable and manageable — ideal for intermediate builders who want both challenge and polish. Below is a breakdown by section:
Head Unit
The head features decent detail. You get a small effect part that can mount on the top of the head (for added flair). The sensors, vents, and crest are clean and crisp.

Body Unit
The torso assembly is robust. Because this kit implements the SEED Action System internally, the core frame gives good stability to support dynamic poses.
Color separation is well handled — you rarely need to rely heavily on stickers for major color transitions.

Arms
Arm construction is straightforward. You get ball joints or socket joints at the shoulders, upper arms rotate, and elbow joints allow good bending.
Hands are swappable; weapons mount cleanly.

Waist
This is one of the improvements in Type II. The skirt and waist connections are slightly more flexible. The rear skirt uses a sliding joint instead of a fixed peg, allowing more freedom. The waist can also rotate fully, giving the model good mid-twist for posing.

Legs
Going to the legs, this is where the Type II shines. It introduces an extra rotating axis in the legs so you can mimic “leg bending” poses more naturally. The kit retains the upward-shifting hip joints (from earlier Infinite Justice) to accommodate high kicks.
A unique tweak: the knees have a slight pivot rotation (left and right) built in — subtle but adds realism.
Ankle joints and foot articulation are solid, though the tilt is somewhat limited.
You also have the Griffon beam blades mounted in the legs (knee–foot) for that signature kick effect.

Weapons and Accessories
This kit comes with a generous weapon set:
- Beam Rifle
- Two Beam Sabers
- Shield
- Beam Shield
- Effect parts for wings
- A lead wire (for anchor firing)
- Detachable wings and backpack
- The beam boomerang in the shield can be removed and held by hands.
The four wings on the backpack are individually movable (up and down) and can each host beam effect parts. You can also detach the backpack entirely for display.
The silver-colored parts are done via a Real Metallic Gloss Injection technique, which gives a nicer metallic sheen out of box.

Articulations
One of the big selling points of this kit is how well it moves. Drawing from the original Infinite Justice's joint systems, the Type II improves and refines.
Here are highlights:
- Head: Ball joint + hinge, allowing tilt and swivel
- Torso / Waist: Full 360° rotation, and some front-back tilt
- Shoulders / Arms: Joints allow forward and upward lift, shoulder tilts, upper arm rotation, double-jointed elbows
- Hips / Legs: Two-piece hip axis allows wider leg splay; front/back leg swings; inner/outer thigh rotation
- Knees: Double-jointed with added minor pivot (left-right) in Type II version
- Ankles: Ball-type joint; some tilt and swivel though limited by armor constraints
In fan commentary, many builders say the articulation is “top notch” for a HG, though they note there is no true ab crunch (forward bending) as a limitation.
Because of its stability and internal frame, you can push it into dynamic “action poses” — kicking, leaping, or dramatic wing spreads — quite securely.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Excellent articulation for a High Grade — especially leg motion and hip joints
- Metallic gloss parts add polish and visual appeal
- Strong set of accessories and flexible weapon options
- Smart engineering on waist / skirt movement (sliding joints, better freedom)
- Detachable backpack and individually movable wing segments
- Stable internal frame with SEED Action System support
- Good color separation out of the box
Cons:
- Limited forward “ab crunch” — you cannot bend the torso much forward
- Some restrictions in ankle tilt due to armor constraints
- The subtle knee pivot is clever, but its practical usefulness is modest
- Because of the detailed parts and effects, overhandling might stress parts (care needed)
- The extra articulation and detail may intimidate beginner builders
Thoughts
The HG 1/144 Infinite Justice Gundam Type II is a standout HG kit for enthusiasts who want a balance of visual flair, articulation, and signature SEED-style action. While it doesn’t revolutionize the Gundam 1/144 segment, it refines a beloved mold with smart enhancements and polished finishes.
If I were to pick one qualifier: versatility. This kit handles static display and dynamic posing almost equally well. The improved leg mechanics are especially satisfying — kicks and lunges feel more believable. The metallic gloss parts give it a premium "out-of-box" look, reducing the need for aggressive paint or finishing for display.
It’s a fantastic pick for collectors who already own other SEED line Gundams (e.g. Strike Freedom, Destiny) and want a complementary unit. Even as a standalone kit, it holds its own as a showcase piece.
In short: a strong, polished, and fun build. Just be gentle with the joints and accessories, and enjoy pushing its pose limits.
