The Gunpla Dictionary: Complete Glossary of Must-Know Terms

Whether you're just getting started or you've been building Gundam model kits for years, understanding the language of Gunpla is essential. From grades and scales to tools and techniques, this Gunpla glossary will help you navigate the hobby with confidence.
Let’s dive into the must-know Gunpla terms every builder should be familiar with.

1. Gunpla

Gunpla is short for “Gundam Plastic Model.” It refers to plastic model kits based on the mecha from the Gundam anime series. These kits are produced by Bandai and come in various grades, sizes, and complexities.

2. Grade

Gunpla kits are categorized into different grades, which indicate the complexity, scale, and detail of the model.

HG (High Grade): 1/144 scale, easy to build, ideal for beginners.
RG (Real Grade): 1/144 scale, but with more detail and inner frame like MG.
MG (Master Grade): 1/100 scale, highly detailed with inner frame structure.
PG (Perfect Grade): 1/60 scale, top-tier detail and complexity.
SD (Super Deformed): Small, stylized kits with exaggerated proportions.

3. Scale

Gunpla kits are available in different scales, representing the size of the mobile suit in relation to the real thing (if it existed).

1/144 scale (HG & RG): Most popular and compact.
1/100 scale (MG): Larger and more detailed.
1/60 scale (PG): The biggest and most intricate kits.
SD (Non-scale) – Chibi-style mini kits.

4. Runners

Runners are the plastic frames that hold all the kit’s parts. Each runner is labeled with a letter and used during the building process.

5. Nub Marks

These are leftover marks after you cut the parts off the runners (plastic frames). Builders usually sand or trim nub marks for a cleaner finish.

6. Snap Fit

Most modern Gunpla kits use a snap-fit design, meaning no glue is required. Pieces fit together tightly without adhesives.

7. Panel Lining

Panel lining is the technique of adding ink or marker to the grooves and details of the kit to make them stand out. It gives depth and a more dynamic look to the finished build.

8. Straight Build

A straight build means assembling the kit as-is without custom modifications, painting, or advanced techniques. Great for beginners or those who enjoy pure building.

9. Custom Build & Kitbash

A custom build refers to a personalized or modified kit, often painted, weathered, or even redesigned. Kitbashing is when you combine parts from multiple kits to create a new design.

10. Decals

Gunpla kits often come with decals (stickers, dry transfers, or water slides) to add markings, numbers, or logos to the model.

Sticker Decals – Easiest to apply but less realistic.
Water Slide Decals – Require water to transfer, look more realistic.
Dry Transfers – Rub-on decals for clean, paint-like effects.

11. Top Coat

A top coat is a clear spray applied to protect the model and give it a specific finish (matte, gloss, or semi-gloss). It's used after painting or applying decals.

12. Weathering

Weathering techniques make the kit look battle-worn or aged. Builders may use dry brushing, washes, and chipping effects to simulate dirt, rust, or damage.

13. Backlog

The backlog refers to the pile of unbuilt Gunpla kits that a collector owns. Many fans have large backlogs as they keep buying new kits faster than they build them!
