RB-79 Ball

RB-79 Ball is the Earth Federation's mobile pod from Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079), and not a mobile suit in the usual sense. It began as the civilian SP-W03 space pod, refitted with armour, a cannon and extra thrusters once the war showed how badly the Federation needed mobile weapons. About 1,200 pods were converted.

What it does in the story

Balls rolled out from June U.C. 0079, before the GM was ready, and went to the front as soon as they were built. Operation Star-One committed over a thousand of them alongside Salamis and Magellan class ships, and the losses there fixed the nickname Mobile Coffin on the type. Hayato Kobayashi is among the Federation pilots seen flying one, and the type stayed in the line as fire support through Solomon and A Baoa Qu.

What makes it different

The hull is a work pod with a gun bolted on.
The RB-79 is a militarised SP-W03: heavier armour, a 180mm low-recoil cannon on top, and extra thrusters on the shell. The round hull and the large front window come straight from the civilian pod, which is why it reads as equipment rather than as a weapon.

Its thrusters fire in discrete charges.
Instead of the liquid-fuel directional thrusters a mobile suit uses, the Ball fires directed solid-fuel charges. Each detonation delivers one impulse and shifts the pod's heading, which gives quick reaction per burst but cannot be sustained.

It runs without a thermonuclear reactor.
A fuel cell drives the Ball, so it can operate from ships with no mobile suit cooling facilities. The thruster banks and gun magazines are modular as well: a depot bolts on a loaded bank or magazine in place of a spent one, which makes turnaround short next to a GM's.

It is small, cheap and awkward to hit.
The pod is shorter than a GM and carries a 4,000 m sensor range. Its listed acceleration is higher than the Zaku II's, the Rick Dom's and the RX-78-2's, and one Ball cost about a quarter of a GM.

How big is it?

Overall height: 12.8 m according to Bandai's official spec

1/144: roughly 8.9 cm, which covers the HGUC releases

1/100: roughly 12.8 cm, which covers the Master Grade

Why buy from P-Rex Hobby

P-Rex Hobby is a Bandai Recommended Hobby Store with 20,000+ customers served and 1,800+ five-star reviews. The work arms use metal shafts, the joint covers at the base of the movable arms use soft parts, and a display base plus 1/100 maintenance crew figures are included.

Key Features

The Gundam Base limited edition — not sold through general retail

Mechanical Clear exterior revealing the internal detail

Metal shafts in the work arms; soft joint covers at the arm bases

Display base and 1/100 maintenance crew figures included

What's Included

MG 1/100 Ball Ver.Ka [Mechanical Clear] plastic model kit

Display base

1/100 maintenance crew figures

MG 1/100 Ball (08 Team Ver.) is a Master Grade plastic model kit by Bandai from "Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Platoon", originally released May 2005.

The official Bandai assembly instruction manual for this kit is available to read and download on this page.

Key Features

Master Grade line by Bandai

Scale: 1/100

Series: Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Platoon

Official instruction manual (PDF) available on P-Rex Hobby

What's Included

MG 1/100 Ball (08 Team Ver.) plastic model kit

Instruction manual

1/144 Ball is a plastic model kit by Bandai from "Mobile Suit Gundam", originally released September 1981.

The official Bandai assembly instruction manual for this kit is available to read and download on this page.

Key Features

Plastic model kit by Bandai

Scale: 1/144

Series: Mobile Suit Gundam

Official instruction manual (PDF) available on P-Rex Hobby

What's Included

1/144 Ball plastic model kit

Instruction manual
