MSM-03 Gogg

MSM-03 Gogg is Zeon's first successful amphibious mobile suit, introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, U.C. 0079). In November U.C. 0078 MIP and Zimmad were ordered to build a machine cooled by seawater, since a ground-use reactor could not run mega particle guns without more cooling than air could give. Zimmad's answer was the first mobile suit to carry them.

What it does in the story

The type was built to hold the coastlines Zeon had taken. Production began in March U.C. 0079, and by May the Gogg was deployed mainly in the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico, where it could reach a target by sea. It debuts in episode 26 of the original series, when two machines of the Mad Angler squadron attack the Federation base at Belfast from the water, and it returns in Gundam ZZ and The 08th MS Team. The Z'Gok replaced it, but almost every later underwater mobile suit was derived from it.

What makes it different

It swims on boiled seawater.
Thermonuclear hydrojet engines draw water in and heat it with the reactor to make thrust, giving the suit long endurance submerged. To cut drag the head is a rounded streamline, equipment is internalised, and the limbs retract while cruising.

Ashore it runs for one to two hours.
On land the suit carries cooling water in an internal ballast tank, and that supply sets its operating time. It is not agile because of its weight, but the pressure-resistant hull that makes it heavy is what gives it defence at close quarters.

The claws exist because it cannot carry options.
Iron Nail claws serve as manipulators and as the close-combat weapon, adopted because carrying optional equipment was difficult for the type.
