GAT-X103 Buster Gundam

GAT-X103 Buster Gundam is the artillery unit of the Earth Alliance's G Project in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002, C.E. 71). It shares the X100 frame with the Duel but is laid out to hit ships and facilities at range. ZAFT takes it at Heliopolis with the Duel, Blitz and Aegis, and Dearka Elsman flies it afterwards.

What it does in the story

After the theft the Buster works in pairs with the Blitz against the Archangel, and is caught in Earth's gravity during the fighting around the ship's descent. In North Africa it operates from the deck of a Lesseps because it cannot keep pace with the BuCUE teams. At the Marshall Islands it is crippled and Dearka is taken aboard the Archangel, and he later retakes it to cover the ship at Orb, ending the war with the Three Ships Alliance.

What makes it different

Two weapons, four configurations.
The 350mm gun launcher and the 94mm high-energy rifle each carry their own sub-generator, and the two dock together. Launcher in front gives the Anti-Armor Shotgun, a scatter of shells covering a wide area; rifle in front gives the Hyper Impulse Long-Range Sniper Rifle, a beam that passes through several targets.

It carries no close-combat weapon at all.
There is no saber and no knife on the Buster. The 220mm six-tube missile pods on the shoulders cover that gap by putting a spread of missiles into anything trying to close, and they double as anti-ship and interception weapons.

The head sensor gets extra armour.
Artillery work depends on the main camera, so the Buster's head sensor sits inside additional plating. It is the one part singled out for protection beyond the standard Phase Shift frame.

Firepower is the whole design brief.
The Buster is built to support the other G Project suits from behind the line, with firepower on the scale of a warship's main guns.
